The tree oozes  a thick red sap when attacked by boring insects. It was this gum that led Sir Joseph Banks to call these and the eucalypts, gum trees.

 

The Dharug People of western Sydney cut off and hollowed out the bulges or lignotubers on the trunk to make bowls.

 

The gum can also be used as an adhesive.
