Scribbly Gums can be badly damaged by termites and fires but still live and provide shelter for animals and birds.

Fire can enter and smoulder in trees for 3 months or more.  This enlarges the hollows allowing large animals like Ringtail Possums to shelter.

In 2013 a fire smouldered in a Scribbly Gum at Doyalson for approximately 2 weeks before wind blew sparks from it and restarted the Catherine Hill Bay Fire.
