The Little Forest Bat

Vespedalus vulturnus

This micro bat is the second smallest mammal in Australia. They are so small that they could sit on your thumb.

On summer nights they have been seen catching insects attracted to the oval lights.  They are so fast that all you see is a flash across the sky.

They roost, during the day and for much of the cold of winter. Roosts are in tree hollows with small openings and occasionally in roof spaces.

Females have a single pup in Spring and feed it milk for about 6 weeks. They carry their baby when they go out to hunt at night. When the babies are too big to be carried, but too young to fly, their mothers leave them in the roost. They will return during the night to feed them.
