Heath Banksia Banksia ericafolia

A great bird attracting plant. It naturally grows on the east coast of Australia. It varies in height from 2 to 7 metres tall.
It was one of the original Banksia species collected by Joseph Banks at Botany Bay in 1770.

Like other Banksias they have dense clusters of short lateral rootlets that form a mat in the soil, just below the leaf litter.
These are called proteoid roots and help the plant to increase its nutrient uptake in poor soils with little phosphorus.
