Hairpin Banksia Banksia spinulosa

The fruits of banksias are called follicles and are hard and woody. They protect the seeds from animals and fire. The fruits need fire before they will open.
Banksia spinulosa ranges in height from between 1 to 3m and the flower colour can be orange, brown, red, or gold. They flower for a long period, from Autumn to Spring, and so are an important source of nectar in Winter.

The flower heads are made up of hundreds or thousands of individual flowers that reminded people of hair pins.
