Gymea Lilly’s prefer to grow along creeks, gullies or on sheltered plateaus and ridges. They mostly prefer elevations of 100–200 metres above sea level. Here it is at about 15m ASL.
It also prefers slopes that face south or southeast but they have been extensively planted by humans, especially along roadsides and in gardens.

Flower spikes begin to grow in Winter and the flowers appear in Spring. The flowers are pollinated by bees and nectar feeding birds.
​
The fruit is a woody capsule which splits open and releases winged seeds.
