This species of ironbark grows in forests on the coast and adjacent foothills, in soils of reasonable fertility and grows from about Maryborough in Queensland to near Sydney.

Its current uses include flooring and decking, shipbuilding, poles, construction, railway sleepers and heavy engineering. Its termite resistance made it useful for fence posts.
