Xanthorrhoea latifolia is the most common species of Grass Tree in the area and grows in sandy or gravelly soil in coastal regions; north from Wyong.
It can take 20 years for the trunk to emerge from the ground and Grass Trees have lived for more than 300 years.

Indigenous Australians produced a sweet drink from the nectar in the flower spike.
The stem was used for a spear, with a hardwood spear tip added. It could also be used to start a fire. A pointed hardwood stick was rotated rapidly into the soft stem base and the friction caused the base to begin to smoulder.
The resin was used as a glue.
Europeans also collected the resin for use as a varnish and to manufacture explosives.
