The yellow flower spikes mostly appear in autumn and early winter and so are very valuable to local insects, birds and animals.

The plants can live for over 60 years. If you turn the leaf over, it has a rusty coloured mid rib.
One of the many birds that feed on the Banksia's flowers is the New Holland Honeyeater (below).
