Ferns reproduce from spores on the underside of their leaves. These  appear as green, brown or black dots or even stripes.

 

The spores are ejected from their cases into the air.

 

When they land they need moisture to float away from the host plant.

​

The Bracken here does not have

spores. They will develop on plants that regrow after a fire passes.
