Imperata cylindrica  is native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia, Africa, and Southern Europe. It has also been introduced to the Southern USA and South America

 

 It is a pyrophyte meaning it is adapted to survive and spread fire. Its presence often means there has been a fire in this area.

In South East Asia it is grown to thatch the rooves of houses.

​

It is an allelopathic plant; that is it releases chemicals into the ground to prevent other plants from germinating.
